chipp's oriental outlook and international recognition
the east and the west, from their different angles, reflect the shared intelligence and civilization of the human race. about 2,400 years ago, mo di (468-376bc), an outstanding chinese philosopher and scientist, together with his student conducted an experiment about the pinhole imaging, the first of its kind in the world, revealing the theory about light and image-forming. mo ching is the world's earliest literature systematically introducing geometrical optics, including shadows, pinhole imaging and imaging on flat mirror, concave mirror and convex mirror. several decades after, greek philosopher and scientist aristotle (384-322bc), also observed and stated the pinhole imaging theory.
people have a long history in exploring the use of images in reflecting and recording history. but not until 1893 l.j.m daguerre, the french stage artist, invented the daguerreotype process for obtaining positive photographic prints did modern photography come into being. the following century witnessed the amazing progress in photography, which also promoted the exchange and cooperation between different parts of the world. in 1957 the first world press photo contest was held in amsterdam, holland. in 2005 the first china international press photo contest (chipp) was held
in shenzhen, china.
chipp observes the world with an open mind. it strives to reach a balance between chinese photojournalistic values with international common practice, between innovation and learning from foreign experiences. of the 13 members in the chipp judging panel, usually eight of them are from abroad. international entries accounted for 70% of the total.and entries are judged by standards abided by international common practice. chipp has built itself on international participation, academic involvement and public recognition, thus increasingly forging itself as a benchmark up to world standards. chipp's constant focus on the theme of peace and development set the tone for the contest's humanistic claim. its prizing-winning works displays a multicultural outlook and care for human kind, reflecting the contest's unique angle as an international competition taken place in the east.
